Bukovina is a historical region in Central Europe, divided between modern-day Romania and Ukraine, located on the northern slopes of the central Eastern Carpathians and the adjoining plains. The Romanian Bukovina is part of the Suceava County (plus three localities in Botosani County).
Bukovina is among the most attractive and visited tourist areas in Romania. This area, worldwide famous today, received in 1975 the international award "Pomme d'Or" from the International Federation of Journalists and Travel Writers. The marvelous architectural monuments decorated with frescos, built in this corner of the country, were included among the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Bucovina is known for its folk costumes, furniture, pottery, tapestries and carpets. The craftsmen continue the traditions inherited from their past generations. Masks, traditional costumes, painted eggs, carved wooden objects, embroideries and carpets are still elements of daily life.
Woodworking is much appreciated in Bukovina, where the material is plentiful. The wood is used mainly for household objects, as well as for building houses. The various parts of the local houses are decorated with sculptures, like the pillars of the porch or yard gate.
An old occupation on these lands is pottery. Two workshops are well known, Radauti, and Marginea.
The main architectural attractions that you must visit in Bukovina are the painted monasteries (Sucevita, Moldovita, Voronet, Humor), the painted churches (Patrauti, Arbore), the Royal Fortress of Suceava. If you come during the cold season, you will have a lot of fun on the ski slopes from Gura Humorului, where you will find a nice winter resort.
If you love the outdoor walking in the middle of the nature, you will find thousands of places where you can relax and enjoy the fresh and pine-scented air.
